UPDATE (8/23): The Residents have canceled their Dog Stab! 50th-Anniversary Tour due to continued concerns about the spread of Covid-19 cases from the Delta variant. While the bulk of shows will be axed, the band will keep three gigs in California: September 15th at the Regent Theater in Los Angeles, September 17th at the Castro in San Francisco, and September 18th at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz.

In a statement, the Residents said: “What is real? Disappointment is real. And the Covid pandemic ravaging our culture is real. The Residents are real, too, in a misty, man-behind-the-curtain way. And the joy that an artist or musician brings to their supporters is also real but so is the apprehension one feels when that excitement is replaced by anxiety and dread, anxiety in the form of responsibility to one’s group and those they come in contact with. Disappointment is a bitter pill and The Residents share in the sorrow that goes with the acrid gulp, but artists have resources to deal with frustration and failure — they create! And they are creating… please stay tuned. As someone who lives in land not far from The Residents’ fog shrouded castle on a hill once said, ‘Tomorrow is another day!’ Thanks for your love and support… and GET VACCINATED!!!”

The Residents will be hitting the road for their Dog Stab! 50th-Anniversary Tour, kicking off August 19th at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon. The tour will run for 22 dates with stops in major cities throughout the U.S. and Canada and will conclude with a hometown show at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre. See tickets online here.

Each night on the 50th-anniversary tour, the avant-garde band will perform tracks from their latest album Metal, Meat & Bone, as well as revisit songs from their 1978 seven-inch Duck Stab EP and their 1976 album The Third Reich ‘n’ Roll.

It’s already been a big year of anniversaries for the band: Last month, the Residents debuted a special new performance, Duck Stab! Alive!, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the long-running alternative variety/music show, Night Flight. The performance was directed by video artist John Sanborn, who has regularly collaborated with the Residents since the Nineties. In 2020, prior to the pandemic, the band staged their 1988 concept album, God in Three Persons, live for the first time at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
