Just like clothes, make-up is used to express one’s personality and style, often revealing deeper meanings behind a person’s thoughts and actions when analysed. is a fan of wearing make-up, as was , and some of the women’s looks were surprisingly similar to one another.

Professional make-up artist and melanin specialist, Joy Adenuga, spoke to Express.co.uk about Meghan and Diana’s make-up looks, giving her analysis on what make-up could – and did – mean to them.

Joy noted that Meghan and Diana have often been pictured with a smoky eye look, often applied with black eyeliner or eyeshadow.

She said: “Meghan has always been a fan of a soft smoky eye, whether that’s using gorgeous chocolate tones to mimic her eye colour, or greys and neutral tones that also enhance her natural appearance.

“Her skin is always fresh looking, with little coverage needed,” Joy added.

“When we think of Diana, we think straight away of her eyeliner, her sometimes blue waterline, powdered skin and peachy-pink blush and lip-gloss.”

Joy explained that both women wore similar shades of lipgloss, opting for natural tones “most of the time”.

She said: “Both women favour a natural lip shade, with Meghan usually wearing something with a cooler undertone and Diana choosing coral-undertones.

“If Meghan goes for colour, it’s usually a plum-toned red and when Diana would rarely wear another lip shade, she would go for a more warm-toned red, always with a glossy finish.”

DON’T MISS

Joy explained that both Meghan and Diana wore make-up daily, but Meghan wears more make-up than her usual look for special occasions and interviews.

An example of this is the interview with Oprah Winfrey, where Meghan wore “fuller coverage”.

Joy said: “Although her signature freckles are still on show, the shade of contouring creates a more flushed look than normal. This could equally be enhancing her natural pregnancy glow and new LA lifestyle.”

The make-up artist compared Meghan’s look in this interview with another famous interview, almost 26 years ago: Diana’s BBC Panorama interview with Martin Bashir.

Meghan wore dark eyeliner around her eyes for the Oprah interview, as did Diana for her reveal-all conversation with Mr Bashir.

Joy said: “The main comparison and depth added to their makeup looks is the iconic eyeliner across their top and bottom lashes. Both are avid eyeliner wearers, but there is more of a focus on this in both interviews.”

The make-up artist went on to suggest how Meghan and Diana were “not afraid to lay with make-up”, with both sporting “rosy cheeks, gloss lips and striking eye-looks that are perfect for captivating viewers”.

Joy added: “Neither of them tried to change how they look with make-up, but used make-up to enhance their natural beauty.”

Joy mentioned how the use of make-up can have a deeper meaning, and Meghan and Diana’s beauty looks reveal much more about their personalities than what one might first assume.

She said: “The power of makeup is amazing as there is a lot you can say with it.

“A bold, glam look they both portrayed is not either of them shying away, but really showing the world this is them – they aren’t always the stereotypically conservative and polished makeup looks we usually see on royals.”

It is not known if Meghan purposefully chose a make-up look similar to Diana’s for her interview with Oprah, but Joy emphasised that “the comparison to Diana’s famous interview-look is there”.

The make-up artist added: “Even the airdate is timely, being close to International Women’s Day, something that draws similarities as both women share strong, and independent characteristics.”
